Dancing Sumo

Sumo have been appointed to develop a new brand identity and communications for Dance City, the National Dance Agency for the North East of England following four way creative pitch.

The tender follows the appointment of Penny Rae as the new Artistic Director/CEO at Dance City. The new brand identity will be launched at the Dancing the World festival in Newcastle this May.

Sumo’s Jim Richardson said ‘We have wanted to work with Dance City for many years and we are delighted to have been selected to take their branding forwards at this exciting time for the organisation.’

Sumo have a long history of branding prestigious cultural organisations including the Brighton Royal Pavilion, the Northern Writer’s Centre, Waygood Centre for Art and Shetland Museum and Archives.

The new brand identity which Sumo created for Waygood has been launched.

Waygood is a new multi-million pound arts development in the heart of Newcastle. Waygood will combine a gallery space, artists studios, art boutique, learning centre and a bar/cáfe, it will open in 2009.

We just heard that SUMO’s interactive team has been selected by the BBC to take part in their Innovation Labs initiative after we submitted ideas to connect BBC content and social networking websites. The BBC Innovation Labs is a pilot project to develop innovative new products and services with independent New Media companies from across the UK.

The announcement from the BBC said ‘Once again the North East and Yorkshire region has been exceptionally strong - a large number of applications combined with experience have led to some very difficult decisions’.

Our interactive team will now spend a week working with the BBC to develop our concept, before pitching it to BBC commissioners.

SUMO’s Jim Richardson, said ‘Over the past twelve months we have invested heavily in developing our interactive offer. Being selected by the BBC for innovation labs is a big pat on the back and gives us a fantastic opportunity to work with the BBC’.
