My daughter insists that I read her ‘That Pesky Rat‘ every night before bed, so I was pleased to hear that this book and others by Lauren Child were being brought to life in the form of ‘Green Drops and Moonsquirters‘, a new exhibition at Seven Stories in Newcastle.
The exhibition leads you through the books and characters created by Lauren Child and is packed with interactive things for children to do. It got a thumbs up from my little girl and I’d recommend that you visit Seven Stories to see the exhibition before it closes at the start of September.
The English Heritage Picnic Concerts kicked off this weekend with Blondie and Rufus Wainwright playing Kenwood. The concerts have something for everybody and the breathtaking settings of Kenwood House and Audley End make these events unmissable.
Sumo developed the promotional campaign for the Picnic Concerts (see more of that here).
Sumo has created the identity for this year’s Design Event North East, the Newcastle-based design festival which will take place from 22-31 October.
Design Event North East aims to develop designers in the early or middle stages of their careers, as well as promoting design in the region. Although the programme is yet to be announced, this year’s event will include exhibitions, video installations, the Design Event Mart and talks, all inspired by the theme of communication.
Sumo are also producing an exhibition for the festival, which will take place at Newcastle Arts Centre during the event. The exhibition, called ‘Exquisite Corpse’ will bring together work from designers and illustrators around the word for a visual game of chinese whispers.
This weekend I took the chance to visit the Extraordinary Measures exhibition at Belsay Hall in Northumberland. The exhibition features the work of Ron Mueck, Mariele Neudecker, Tessa Farmer, Mat Collishaw, Freddie Robin, Slinkachu and Ciaran Treanor.
The exhibition uses the house, gardens and castle at Belsay brilliantly and creates an experience which is a bit like stepping in to a fairytale.
MuseumNext is an annual conference about how museums and galleries can benefit from new technology and the latest web trends. The event which was organised and chaired by Sumo’s Managing Director Jim Richardson, brought together experts from leading museums and galleries in Europe and the United States.
We are passionate about both culture and technology at Sumo, and MuseumNext was a great opportunity to share this with museums and galleries from around the world.
A visit to The Wordsworth Trust in Cumbria gave us the first chance to see our new branding for the organisation rolling out. Paul Kleian from the Trust will talk about his experience rebranding Wordsworth at the Museums & Heritage Show later this month.
We love it when we are given the chance to push ourselves to produce extraordinary pieces of design, and this poster for an exhibition of Pinhole photography which is taking place in Newcastle this May is something very special.
Each poster has been hand finished with hundreds of individually applied holes, creating a tactile image which people just have to touch. Watch out for these going up around the North East over the next few weeks.
Today was the launch of Newcastle Science Fest (and Sumo have help to developed the promotional campaign) it kicked off with a mass hulla hoop in Newcastle City Centre, where shoppers were encouraged to join in with the fun.
SHINE is a festival taking place in Sunderland from 21-31 January 2010, it will transform the city in to an urban garden made up of dramatic projections, interactive games and magical light shows.
The Sumo team developed the promotional campaign for the festival, as part of our ongoing work to promote Public Art in Sunderland and we will be joining the crowds in the city centre for the launch next weekend.
Living in the North East I am spoilt for great cultural days out. This Christmas NewcastleGateshead have a fantastic programme of activities like The Enchanted Park (pictured above) which I visited last weekend.
Check out the whole NewcastleGateshead Winter Festival programme here.
